New year, new opportunities

Standard

2017 was a breakthrough year for Crafts and company on and off the island.  2018 promises to be even better.  Team crafts and company are committed to creating opportunities for crafting for fun, for charity and also in support of individual micro businesses.

Our first Craft Club of the new year was really well attended and this time we tackled the skills involved in intuitive journaling.  At its best this form of journaling becomes incredibly therapeutic and we learn to read the messages contained within the pages.  As a result of a great session a wee intuitive journaling group has been formed on the island so that we can carry on developing this skill throughout the year.  Fiona from Earth Threads led this session and for the first time there was a chance for members to purchase resources should they wish to continue the practice.  Fiona offered these resources at special member prices and this is an important way of supporting fellow makers.

Next month, we are cushion making with two levels of experience.  Those new to sewing with a machine will work to mark, cut and sew the fabric to make their cushion whereas those with more experience will work on an applique panel first before sewing their cushion.  Craft club has been planned for the entire year and details will be appearing on our Events Page and our facebook page.  Posters have also gone up around the island.  New members are always most welcome.

Our craft fayres in 2017 got busier and busier and we are now changing the day to a Sunday which will think will allow locals to attend.  That said, our very first one of the year is on bank holiday Monday at Easter (April 2nd).  We are expanding this year by taking on an additional hall in the building so that we might accommodate more stallholders and expand our very popular tea room.  Workshops will also be running on those days on a drop in basis allowing more opportunities to learn new crafting skills.

Crafts and company are also going to be working with the Friends of Brodick Castle on some events during 2018 and we very much look forward to this new relationship as crafting on the island continues to grow and flourish.

Such is the popularity of new skill learning that one of our collective, Fiona from Earth Threads, is offering a brand new Fabric Surface Design Course.  This will be an eight week course where participants will learn to design, mark make, paint, print, machine and hand embroider to create their own original piece of textile art.  The hope is that some other members of the collective might begin to offer courses as the year unfolds increasing opportunity and scope.  If you interested in any courses publicised here just contact us for further information.

Our Disability Africa Friendship Quilt Packs sold really well and we have made over £200 for the charity.  People on and off the island are now busy sewing away before returning them to us to make into a lap quilt or two that will then be raffled at our Easter events.  This will provide further money for the charity while giving the lucky recipient the most beautiful of quilts to put over their lap on a cold evening.

Crafts and company are about to embark on their next charity project and also have two further lined up after that so our commitment to crafting for charity continues and there will be lots of opportunities to get involved.  More information will be available here soon and on our facebook page.

We always love to hear about what other people are up to in the world of crafting so do let us know and we might be able to feature it here.

Wishing you all a productive and happy crafting experience in the coming year.

Best wishes from

Liz, Morag, Marion, Linda. Paula, Coral & Fiona
