Makers’ Festival 2019

Crafts & Company are delighted to be collaborating with Brodick Castle this summer to put on a Makers’ festival to celebrate all things handmade on the island.   The festival runs over three days and is aimed at locals and visitors.  The focus is participatory with workshops for adults and children taking centre stage.  There are four workshop slots each day with multiple options running in each slot.  Workshops include sewing, knitting, nature crafts, working with clay, working with paint, jewellery making and much more.  Each workshop lasts a maximum of an hour and you will have something to take away with you.

As well as the workshops we have a Makers’ Exhibition inside the castle.  The theme is work inspired by the castle and/or the gardens and there will be a range of media included.  The theme running through the whole festival is sustainability so we have asked every maker to think about their practice and make it as sustainable as possible.

We have a range of makers giving talks and demonstrations about their practice over the three days.  We will also be welcoming a range of makers to sell their handmade work.  Continuing the theme of sustainability we have a number of Arran based environmental charities joining us for the three days to include COAST, Eco Savvy and the Land Initiative.  We also have Simon, the author of the Arran Green Map, with us so that we can talk to him about this fabulous and much needed project.  Rumour has it there will also be some live music on one or more of the days.

This is our very first Makers’ Festival on the island and we do hope you will pop along and join in the adventure.  Normal castle entrance fees apply over the festival but many of the workshops are free.  Where there is a charge it is nominal just to cover the makers cost of materials.  People from all over the island are working so hard to make this first event a success and there is a real and lasting community spirit in all the preparations.  Now all we need is the weather to be kind to us.

See you there.  X
